Renting a Car in Türkiye Without a Credit Card: How It Works

Can you rent a car in Türkiye without a credit card? Sometimes, yes, but the answer depends on why the company asks for the card in the first place. Here is how it works, what “no credit card” can really mean, and what to check before you book.

Why most companies ask for a credit card

A credit card is rarely needed to pay for the rental itself. It is needed as security. At pick-up the company reserves an amount on the card, a pre-authorisation, and keeps it reserved until the car has been returned and checked. Nothing is taken yet, but your bank sets the sum aside and you cannot use that part of your limit. If costs arise after the rental, such as damage or missing fuel, the company can collect them from that amount.

That is why the card usually has to be a credit card, in the driver's name. Many companies do not accept a debit card as security, and cash is often refused for that purpose too. In our own review of 1,018 rental listings in Antalya, the median deposit was ₺4,000–4,500, and wherever a deposit exists, a credit card is what secures it.

What “no credit card” can really mean

The same words are used for very different offers, so read them closely:

• No card to book, but a cash deposit at pick-up. You skip the card at the booking stage and still hand over money as security.
• A debit card is accepted, often with extra conditions. The deposit still exists; it is only secured differently.
• No deposit at all. Nothing is held and nothing is kept, so there is nothing a credit card would secure. This is how we work: you can rent without a credit card and without a deposit, and you pay when you collect the car, in cash or by card.

Seven things to check before you book

Fine print is where a “no credit card” offer can fall apart at the desk. Before you book, check that:

• No card number is requested while you book, and nothing is charged before pick-up.
• There is no deposit of any kind: not on a card, not in cash, and not “just for fuel”.
• The damage cover is stated up front: what is included, and what the excess is if the car is damaged.
• The total you see is the price you pay, with every extra you chose already in it.
• The payment methods at pick-up are clear: cash, debit card or credit card.
• Cancellation is free, and you receive a written confirmation by e-mail.
• Other customers' reviews exist and match what the company promises; a quick search on Google Maps shows them.

What happens if the car is damaged and nothing was held?

This is the question that decides whether a no-deposit offer is sound. With us, every rental includes a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW): if the car is damaged, you pay at most that car's excess, not its full value. The excess depends on the car and is shown during booking. Smart Protection adds theft, tyre and glass cover, and Premium Protection also covers damage up to a set limit in accidents that are your own fault or one-sided, and adds Roadside Assistance. Because nothing is held at pick-up, there is no blocked amount to wait for afterwards.

Documents, licence and age

You need your passport or ID card and your driving licence. A licence printed in the Latin alphabet is valid as it is; one in another script, such as Cyrillic or Arabic, must be presented together with an International Driving Permit, which you should arrange at home before you travel. Drivers must be at least 25 and have held their licence for two years; for the 9-seat Hyundai Staria and Fiat Ulysse the minimum is 27, with three years. A credit card is not on the list.

Picking up at the airport
